About the Role
The architect will support the planning, design, and modernization of research and laboratory facilities at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), the Department of Energy's lead nuclear energy research and development site. INL has recently delivered major capital projects such as a new Sample Preparation Laboratory supporting research and qualification of structural nuclear materials, and new mission facilities including the Cybercore Integration Center and the Collaborative Computing Center. Potential work may include developing architectural concepts and construction documents for specialized research laboratories, nuclear and energy facilities, and secure or mission-critical buildings, while ensuring compliance with DOE standards, federal building codes, safety and security requirements, and sustainability goals.
Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Architect to work on our Facility Design and Project Engineering team. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. Regular work at our desert site locations is expected.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Perform architectural design for building and facility projects, including development of design concepts, space planning, building systems coordination, and preparation of architectural drawings, specifications, and design documents.
- Ensure architectural designs comply with applicable building codes, accessibility standards, life safety requirements, and DOE/BEA standards.
- Serve as the primary architectural point of contact and chairman/organizer for design reviews, verification walk-downs, and constructability reviews.
- Coordinate architectural deliverables with engineering disciplines, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure integrated, code-compliant designs.
Provide technical leadership and decision-making for architectural design in conjunction with Project Management inputs.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge of architectural design principles, building systems, materials, and construction methods.
- Knowledge of applicable building codes, accessibility (ADA) standards, life safety codes, and related regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in architectural design and drafting software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, BIM tools).
- Knowledge of project engineering, project management, and project control activities. Knowledge in project engineering and management tools and DOE work package and change control process and systems.
- Knowledge of the practical application of architecture, engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services, and building/facility design.
Required:
- Professional Architecture License: Current license to practice architecture in the State of Idaho (or ability to obtain Idaho licensure by reciprocity within 6 months).
- Required Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) or Master of Architecture (M.Arch) degree from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
- Level 3: Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience or Master's degree and 2 years of related experience.
- Level 4: Bachelor's degree and 9 years of related experience or Master's degree and 6 years of related experience.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a “Q” clearance which requires US Citizenship.
- May be required to receive PMP within two years of selection.
- May require review and approval by the Engineering Committee.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- NCARB certification.
- LEED accreditation.
- Previous experience working in a federal, state, or other public-sector projects such as those for the Department of Energy (DOE), with demonstrated knowledge of applicable government codes, standards, and compliance requirements.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field environment, which may include construction sites. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required. Job Information:
- The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($79,344 - $162,732) / Level 4 ($95,256 - $195,288). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
- Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
- TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
